Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) involves the preparation of motile sperm by an andrologist, which is directly placed inside the uterus using a very fine catheter. The sperm is deposited after the release of an egg (or eggs) is determined, during a natural or stimulated cycle. Conception can then follow naturally inside the body.

Who may need this test
Couples with mild male infertility, unexplained infertility, ejaculatory disorders (including retrograde ejaculation), or failure to conceive after ovulation induction. NOT recommended for women with severe fallopian disease, blocked fallopian tubes, chronic pelvic infection, or severe endometriosis.
Common clinical use
IUI can be offered in a natural or stimulated cycle. In a natural cycle, follicular monitoring starts from day 9–10 of the period until the follicle ruptures — IUI is done on the rupture day. In a stimulated cycle (super ovulation), tablets or hormonal injections begin on day 2 of the period; follicles are measured by ultrasonography; an HCG injection matures the eggs at optimal follicle size; IUI is performed ~36 hours after the HCG injection.

Preparation
For the full cycle, arrive 2–3 days before the period starts (~15 days to insemination). Collecting medications in advance can reduce stay to 5–7 days — arrive around day 9–10 of the period.
