Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) Treatment

PID is a serious infection that requires prompt medical attention. Learn how we can help protect your reproductive health.

What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)?

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is an infection of a woman's reproductive organs. It is a complication often caused by some STIs, like chlamydia and gonorrhea. Other infections that are not sexually transmitted can also cause PID.

PID is a serious condition that can lead to irreversible damage to the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other parts of the female reproductive system, and is a primary preventable cause of infertility.

How Do You Get PID?

You can get PID if bacteria move up from your vagina and infect your reproductive organs. Many different types of bacteria can cause PID, but gonorrhea and chlamydia are the most common culprits.

You are at a higher risk of getting PID if you:

  • Have an STI and do not get treated.
  • Have more than one sexual partner.
  • Have a sexual partner who has more than one sexual partner.
  • Have had PID before.
  • Are sexually active and are 25 years of age or younger.
  • Douche.

Symptoms of PID

Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and some women may not experience any symptoms at all.

  • Pain in the lower abdomen (the most common symptom).
  • Fever.
  • An unusual vaginal discharge that may have a foul odor.
  • Pain and/or bleeding during sex.
  • Burning sensation during urination.
  • Bleeding between periods.

PID Treatment in Nepal

PID can be cured with antibiotics if diagnosed and treated early. However, treatment will not reverse any scarring or damage to the reproductive organs that has already been caused by the infection.

Our doctors will prescribe a combination of antibiotics to cover the likely causative agents. It is crucial to take all medication as directed. Your sexual partner(s) should also be tested and treated to prevent reinfection.

Long-Term Complications if Left Untreated

  • Infertility: Damage to the fallopian tubes can make it impossible for an egg to be fertilized.
  • Ectopic Pregnancy: A pregnancy that occurs outside the womb, which is a life-threatening condition.
  • Chronic Pelvic Pain: Scarring in the pelvis can lead to long-lasting pain.
