Gardnerella & Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

Understand the role of Gardnerella vaginalis in causing BV, the most common vaginal condition, and how to treat it effectively.

What is Gardnerella Vaginalis?

Gardnerella vaginalis is a type of bacterium that is naturally found in the vaginal flora. However, its overgrowth is the primary cause of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). BV is a condition that results from a disruption in the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, leading to a decrease in beneficial lactobacilli and an increase in anaerobic bacteria like Gardnerella.

While Gardnerella can be found in sexually active individuals, BV itself is not considered an STI, but an imbalance of the vaginal environment.

Symptoms of Gardnerella Overgrowth (BV)

The symptoms associated with Gardnerella overgrowth are the classic signs of BV:

  • A thin, watery discharge that may be white, gray, or greenish.
  • A distinct, unpleasant "fishy" odor, especially after intercourse or during menstruation.
  • Vaginal itching or irritation.
  • A burning sensation when urinating.

Treatment for Gardnerella and BV

Treatment is aimed at rebalancing the vaginal flora and is typically done with antibiotics. Our specialists at STD Nepal will provide a confidential diagnosis and prescribe the right medication.

  • Metronidazole: This is a common antibiotic for BV, available as oral pills or a topical gel applied inside the vagina.
  • Clindamycin: This is another effective antibiotic, often prescribed as a cream.

It's important to complete the entire course of treatment. Recurrent BV is a common issue, and our doctors can help develop a management plan if you experience frequent infections.
